The photo shows a picture of Maria Cristina (waterfall) in the present. It was taken by me when I and my friends visited the place a month ago (year 2009).

MARIA CRISTINA FALLS is a waterfall situated at ILIGAN CITY (city of majestic waterfalls) , MINDANAO, PHILIPPINES. Before, this waterfall was not really developed but as of today, it is now considered as a good tourist spot of the city. The water-fall is known by its natural beauty which is 320-feet high. It is not only beautiful but also helpful because it is the primary source of power for the city's industries and the whole Mindanao region.

The waterfall is located away from the high way so we had walked many steps before seeing it but after viewing the beauty and calmness of the waterfall, it resulted to mind and body relaxation.

Iligan City is the city of majestic waterfalls because it has more or less 23 known waterfalls. The very famous of all of them is the Maria Cristina Falls, primary source of hydroelectric power in Mindanao.Iligan City is also known as the Industrial Center of the South. Through National Power Corporation (NAPOCOR), the city provides hydroelectric power to Mindanao areas. And also the National Steel Corporation which is now known as GLobal Steelworks, one of the largest steel manufacturers in the Southeast Asia contributes more impact to the industrialization of the city.

According to history, ILIGAN is derived from the word "ilijan" which means the "FORTRESS OF DEFENSE" against terror attacks of pirates and other Mindanao tribes. Early settlement was from Bayug to it's present barangay Poblacion. The Christian community survived from their enemies through their faith in God and to their patron Saint Michael the Archangel. The Spaniards left Iligan in 1899 and in 1900 the Americans took over the area. Iligan became a municipality with eight barangays together with the municipal district of Mandulog. For about 40 years of peace, iligan municipality was conquered by the Japanese in 1942. On Novemver 15, 1944, Iligan City held their first Commonwealth Day parade as city's celebration of the ending of Japanese occupancy.The city was declared a first class city in 1969 and was reclassified as First Class City "A" on July 1, 1977 through Presidential Decree No. 465. Iligan City was again reclassified as a highly urbanized city in 1983.
